Korshak Q&A with Mark Davis

Meet Mark Davis, a fine jewelry designer based in New York City. Mark Davis is known for his use of vintage Bakelite, one of the first plastics ever made. Since Bakelite is no longer produced, the designer scours antique markets and estate sales to acquire the rare material…sometimes in the most unusual forms, like a jute box or a radio! The Bakelite is then shaped and restored to its original luster and set with modern inlays or precious and semi-precious stones.

Korshak Q&A with Amanda Sterett

We love Amanda Sterett here at The Shak at Stanley Korshak. Amanda is a local designer who knows what Texas ladies like to wear! I also had the pleasure of getting to know Amanda better through SMU Fashion Week this Spring, where we served on the same panel.

Now it’s your turn to meet this fabulous designer, known for her wire-wrapping technique. Once you watch the video, you’ll understand why Amanda Sterett was named “Best Jewelry Designer” in Dallas by D Magazine in 2010 and 2011!

Atelier Minyon

Today we are spotlighting a new jewelry collection for Stanley Korshak, the delightfully wild Atelier Minyon!

The designer, Alp Sagnak, is the heart and soul of Atelier Minyon. He grew up in a Turkish family of jewelers, following the family tradition, while taking it to a new level by moving to New York and designing cutting edge fine jewelry.

Alp Sagnak uses the highest quality materials while taking a personal and sometimes humorous approach to design. Some collections reference his rich heritage, and others are edgy and modern and betray his love for rock music, gothic styles, and dark art. What binds them together is the beautiful and masterly way they are made, using traditions passed down throughout the generations.

I think this promotional video fusing jewelry with rock music says it all…rock on Atelier Minyon!

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Monique Pean, a young jewelry designer, who was selected as one of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF) winners in 2009. Since 2009, Monique Pean has continued to gain recognition in the industry as an “eco jewelry designer”, and her jewelry has been spotted on celebrities such as Michelle Obama, Natalie Portman, and Oprah.

Korshak Q&A with Vanessa Mooney
Vanessa Mooney Jewelry was established in 2009 under a core idea: “let uninhibited design intuition lead the way”.  Vanessa has always enjoyed the freedom art allows, leading her to become a self-taught designer as a creative outlet.  All pieces are hand-crafted in Downtown Los Angeles offering her audience to choose from eclectic styles typically found in Californian street style.
Last week we got the chance to sit down with Vanessa when she was here for her trunk show in The Shak.
Q: Where do you get your design inspiration?
A: I design 150 to 200 pieces in each collection, which is a lot for a jewelry designer.  Some just come from my mind, from different feelings that I get about pieces. I also admire other cultures – African, Napoli, Thai, and different tribal styles. This spring I was really inspired by the neon colors of the 80’s, and I am working on a futuristic-bohemian inspired line for Fall.
Q: How does your personal style influence your designs?
A: I am definitely a California girl. I love warm weather, feeling comfortable, and eclectic pieces. I think you see that in my jewelry.
Q: What is the one thing you can’t live without?
A: A good leather jacket.
Q: Describe the Vanessa Mooney customer.
A: I am actually shocked a lot by who buys my jewelry. At first it was the funky girl who has that personal sense of style, but as the brand has grown, it transcends these boundaries. Although I think young “street style” when designing the brand, I have seen it worn by all ages, 15 to 60.
Q: Which celebrity would you like to see wearing your jewelry?
A:  I am that girl who doesn’t really know celebrities. (laughs). Rihanna; because I think she is really cool and wears jewelry really well.

MONIQUE PÉAN TRUNK SHOW

“We continually work around the natural rock formations we find—it’s fascinating to see what nature creates,” Monique Péan on Vogue.com.

Jewelry designer Monique Pean is at Stanley Korshak this weekend, February 3rd & 4th, to provide a sneak peek of her INTI collection of exquisite eco-friendly pieces that will be exclusively available to our clients.

Monique Pean’s career has sky rocketed in recent years (hello, September Vogue feature!) due to her unique designs, bold colors, exquisite details, and sustainable materials. And, what’s new for spring 2012? “There’s a lot more color than I’ve used before,” Monique said to Vogue magazine of “the ombré tourmaline, sliced emerald, and opal discoveries from the region (Peru), which have been expertly converted into shimmering adornments such as drop earrings, necklaces, and those signature diamond pavé rings.”

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Monique at the Tutu Chic event in December, and she truly is beautiful, interesting, and incredibly creative. Come meet Monique for yourself and see her stunning pieces this weekend!
